President’s Message – March 2018
To all COCOA OC members,
Since we last spoke, many things have either happened and/or are about to happen.
We had a great turnout on February 7th for the club’s 44th Anniversary party at Lance and Deborah Stander’s new Hillbank / Superformance facility in Irvine. This was the ‘Grand Opening’ of the new location and they did a heroic job to get it ready for our event. Congratulations on your move and a huge THANK YOU to all of you for making the Anniversary so memorable. Once again, Richard Jones provided the fine BBQ meal and there cake as promised. Membership raffle, gift giving and presentation of the Member(s) of the Year Award preceded the main program. This year’s Member of the Year Award went to Mike and Rosalia Battanero. Thank you, Mike and Rosalia for all your help to promote COCOA-OC. Well deserved! John Clinard did a wonderful job with his tribute to Dan Gurney and graciously accepted the responsibility of delivering Dan’s 50th Anniversary champagne bottle to his family on behalf of the Cobra Club. John also introduced our speaker, Tim Considine, actor and automotive author, who contributed his own personal stories of his longtime friendship with Dan Gurney. Tim, accompanied by noted automotive photographer, Pete Biro, spoke about his upcoming book, ’Twice Around the Clock, The Yanks at LeMans’, and gave the club members a unique, first time prevue of his seven volume LeMans history. He presented the mid-sixties Shelby Cobra and Ford GT40 era – definitely something to peak the interest of this crowd. Well done Tim, and we look forward to seeing the completed book published soon.
Hard on the heels of this event was the Dr. George Car Show in Palm Springs on Saturday the 10th. Shelby driver and club member, Allen Grant, was showing his Lola GT Mk6 and Cobra alongside Pete and Gayle Brock’s Aerovault trailer display. Of course, they were surrounded by another 1000 plus cars of all makes, models, years and condition. Quite a sight to behold on the grounds of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden grounds. This is a great midwinter weekend getaway in SoCal. Keep checking our website calendar for these events. Allen, Pete Brock, and one other gentleman of Indy car fame that I can’t remember (I hate when that happens) took part in a lively panel discussion midday and covered many topics near and dear to the Shelby Cobra marque.
Another great winter/spring event is Jim Saxton’s West Coast Racing open track weekend at Willow Springs Raceway held this past weekend – March 3 and 4. It was well attended by the club and if you just waited long enough for the weather to improve, you were rewarded with a glorious Sunday, clear and crisp. The track was fast and my three sons (technically, one biological and two add ons) took advantage and engaged in some spirited sessions, leaving me, Dr. Dirt, to pace the hot pit in open jealousy. A couple of passenger sessions only wetted the appetite for a little more speed in my diet. Soon, SOON, I will be back on the track! This is a very well run event with a wide variety of fast cars. Look for the second outing in November, 2018, and information on our website.
Moving forward at a fast pace is our club’s calendar also:
Saturday, March 24th, is the New Member Cruise and BBQ personally prepared our master BBQ expert, Richard Dayyat. Frank Lewis has arranged a special cruise for us with Frank Chirat to open the Crevier car collection near John Wayne Airport for our enjoyment. We will cruise from the Main Place parking lot to Crevier by a yet to be chosen scenic, circuitous route, then onto Huntington Beach to the ‘Clubhouse’ for the BBQ and afternoon socializing. See our website and/or newsletter for the details and RSVP. Come, join in on the fun and meet your fellow club members. Great opportunity to get involved.
2018 Wine Tour – April 20-22nd.
This is the 25th annual wine tour to the Paso Robles/San Luis Obispo region and Paul Westberg is setting up a great weekend. Once again, check the details on the website and/or newsletter. Sign up early because this is a limited participation event.
Back on track in May (12th and 13th) with Lynn Park and the Cobra Club at Willow Springs.
And our own ‘Concours de Nice’ car show at the Park Mall (South Coast Plaza) on Sunday, June 10th, with preceding reception on Saturday, June 9th at Hillbank / Superformance in Irvine. Flyer to follow but start waxing now!
That’s all for now. I am going to take a break and go racing at Laguna Seca with Bob this weekend.
Please join the club for dinner at the Rib Trader on Wednesday, March 7th!
